Implant-Supported Dentures
For patients missing most or all of their teeth, implant-supported dentures offer a secure and long-lasting restorative solution. By attaching the denture to dental implants embedded in the jawbone, this solution can restore the ability to eat, speak, and smile without having to worry that your dentures will shift out of place. At our practice in Long Island, NY, Dr. Joseph Fusco can determine your candidacy for dental implants and coordinate your treatment with local oral surgeons. Once your implants are in place, he can provide your custom denture.
Do I Qualify For an Implant-Supported Denture?
To qualify for dental implants, you need to be in good oral health and have sufficient jawbone tissue to support dental implants. With an implant-supported denture, four to eight implant posts are embedded into the jawbone, so you must be healthy enough to undergo the placement procedure.
The best way to find out if implant-supported dentures are right for you is to make an appointment with Dr. Fusco. During the appointment, he can perform a full oral health evaluation including x-rays and scans of your jaw. The jaw will shrink and change shape in the long-term absence of tooth roots. In many cases, candidacy can be restored by grafting bone tissue to the jaw.
The Restoration Process
He will first recommend you to an oral surgeon. Our practice partners with several reputable doctors in the area to provide safe implant placement. During your appointment, your oral surgeon will strategically embed four to eight implants into your jawbone.
For some patients, our dentist can attach a temporary denture the same day as their implant placement procedure. Others will need to wait three to six months for their implants to fuse with the surrounding bone tissue and create a stable base for their restoration. Throughout the recovery period, we can monitor your progress and ensure your posts are healing properly.
When your implants have healed, we will take impressions of your jaws and implants. Next, Dr. Fusco can design a custom denture. Once the denture is ready, he can attach it to your implant posts for a fully restored smile.
Benefits of an Implant-Supported Restoration
Dental implants are the gold standard in tooth replacement technology. The biocompatible titanium posts replace the tooth roots, allowing your dentures to operate in the same way as natural teeth. As you bite and chew, the implants stimulate your jawbone, preventing the tissue atrophy associated with tooth loss. In addition, the strong foundation provided by dental implants keeps dentures in place, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with absolute confidence.
