What Are Dentures?
Dentures are a dental restoration that can replace multiple teeth or all of your teeth. Partial dentures can fill gaps throughout your smile that cannot be restored with a dental bridge, while full dentures can replace an entire row of missing teeth in one or both jaws. These restorations will be matched to your surrounding teeth and gums for highly lifelike aesthetics and comfort.
Traditional Dentures
Traditional dentures are removable and are held in place with either dental adhesive or natural suction. Closed-palate upper dentures are secured with suction, while open palate upper and lower dentures require adhesive. Partial dentures may also have small metal clasps that attach to surrounding teeth for support. Traditional dentures offer patients with missing teeth many advantages, including renewed ability to enjoy the foods they love and to speak clearly. They can also improve your appearance by supporting sagging facial tissues that often accompany tooth loss.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are permanently attached to dental implants, so they are not removable. Many patients prefer this option as they enjoy greater stability and enhanced confidence because there is never any worry the dentures will slip out of place. Dental implants also support jawbone health, preventing bone loss that is not avoidable with traditional dentures.
The Treatment Process
The first step to receive your restorations is meeting with Dr. Fusco for a one-on-one consultation. He believes strongly in providing personalized care for all each and every patients and will work with you to develop a custom treatment plan. After examining any remaining teeth, as well as your gums and jawbone, he can determine whether a traditional or implant-supported option will work best for you.
Preparing Your Restoration
Dr. Fusco will work closely with you to select high-quality materials for your dentures. We will take precise impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth. Dr. Fusco will use these detailed impressions to design your custom dentures. An off-site lab will fabricate your dentures from the materials you selected during your consultation.
Dr. Fusco can provide the customize restorations you need to restore your smile and quality of life.
Once we receive your prosthetic from the lab, you will return for a final fitting. If the denture fits and feels comfortable, you will be on your way. We will provide you with everything you need to know about wearing and caring for your dentures. It is important to note that with traditional dentures, your jawbone will continue to change in shape and your dentures may begin to feel loose. Every few years you will likely need to have your dentures replaced to restore a comfortable and secure fit.
Implant-Supported Restorations
If you receive an implant-supported restoration, you will first need to receive dental implants. Once your jaw has fully healed around the implant posts, you can return to our office to receive your permanent restoration. Dr. Fusco will secure your custom denture in place for a lifelike, secure smile.
